at the debate the other night. trying to he's been saying for years. >> when governor romney tried to give us his business advice about the economy and said that we should let detroit go bankrupt, we said, no thanks, we're not going to take that advice. we've reignited an auto industry that's on top of the world. >> he wasn't having a shining moment at the debate. watch this. >> everybody here, incredible professionals, they are such great friends and they just perform flawlely, night after night i can't always say the same. >> so he joked about his performance but he's going hard on the policies. is that a winning formula, marg? >> absolutely. that's why the president is usually net favorable. even new polls that have come out in the last couple of days have shown romney doing better, even leading obama, he's still net favorable. that kind of looseness that you're seeing from the president on the campaign trail, we're just simply not going to get from romney. that's just not the kind of candidate that he is. when you take all of that together combined with mitt romney who has put himself in

't the president's best night, that's for sure. and governor romney to his credit showed up ready to play and really put in a good performance. but we've seen that mitt romney can do quite well in a debate, in a controlled environment where he's had a lot of time to practice, where he's had an opportunity to sort of think a lot about what he wants to say and frame his arguments and he went out and delivered. but now he's going to have to go out there and defend those arguments, going to have to go out on the stump and talk to people, talk to reporters. again, articulate the vision that john was talking about which he's been unable to do. we'll see if he's able to take that performance out of a controlled environment and i think the onus is on the president as well. he certainly came out swinging yesterday and did a lot of things people wished he had done at the debate on wednesday night, but he's going to have to make the same argument. >> well, the next two debates will be fascinating, as will the vp debate. for now, thank you both very much. >>> coming up, education was a key part of th

after night. i can't always say the same. >> meanwhile, the romney campaign is on the offense, taking friday's september jobs report which the white house touts as a triumph and turning that against the president. listen. >> this economy is not doing well and the fact that you have a white house celebrating an unemployment rate of 7.8% with 23 million americans out of work or unemployed or underemployed, tells you a lot about the failure of this administration's policies. >> this, of course, leading up to thursday's first and only vice presidential debate between joe biden and paul ryan. democratic congressman tim ryan joins us this morning from the crucial swing state of ohio where an appeals court decided on friday that early voting will be reinstated for the three days that lead up to election day. nice to see you. thank you for taking with us. >> good to be with you. >> appreciate that. let's talk a gallup poll to start with. you can see in the time since the debate, it looks as if mitt romney has gained points. president obama has lost points. i think you guys have the wrong poll

much could ride on tomorrow night. mitt romney held a rally in denver overnight, where he previewed tomorrow night's fireworks. >> these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. and the american people have to make their choice as to what kind of america they want. >> reporter: he will likely start the day tomorrow with a workout. he's an elliptical machine kind of guy. meanwhile, the president is at this posh resort in nevada where he'll no doubt also be hitting the gym before getting another day of debate practice. while he may be strong physically, he admits he's out of debate shape. romney debated most recently in february. >> i think the earmarks, we had it with them. >> reporter: the last time the president debated was almost four years ago. >> we've got to have a president who is going to tackle it head on. >> reporter: it's not clear how much this is lowering expectations. but sources tell abc news, that the president's debate prep has been exhausting and he's clearly out of practice. something he acknowledge

states, governor mitt romney. >> reporter: mitt romney landed in colorado monday night scoring the endorsement of denver broncos football legend john elway. >> what an honor, what a welcome and colorado welcome. thank you so much >> reporter: governor's first and only event ahead of tomorrow's big presidential debate was at a packed air and space museum in denver. >> people want to know who is going to win? who is going to score the punches? you know, in my view it's not so much winning andalusian or even the people themselves, the president and myself. it's about something bigger than that. >> reporter: still playing off the enthusiastic crowd, romney appeared to test out a few new zingers including this one on the keystone oil pipeline halted by the obama administration. >> by the way, i'm going to get that pipeline from canada if i have to build it myself. >> reporter: romney's running mate paul ryan was greeted by his family in iowa before kicking off a bus tour in dubuque where he emphasized the importance of the upcoming debates. >> we are entering the debate phase, the

debate between barak obama and mitt romney is tomorrow night and the campaigns are doing whatever they can to get ready. actually i heard that the obama campaign is a little worried 'cause during his flight to nevada on sunday, the president apparently watched four hours of football instead of studying. [ laughter ] although it did mark the first time all year obama has seen something get passed. [ laughter ] >> steve: funny. >> brian: i did not hear that. is that the premise of that joke true? that he watched four hours of football? >> martha: you can also go back to the notion that it shouldn't take that much studying to get ready for this. >> steve: you should know. >> martha: they've been working on these issues, they've been campaigning on these issues across the country for months and months and months. does it really take that much studying to get ready for this? >> brian: is it wrong to disagree with martha? >> martha: absolutely. ask hemmer. >> brian: i think it's totally different when someone is coming at you and saying you're wrong about this and defending something yo

? >> i think romney's running a little behind but if he does well on wednesday night he's going to close the gap because people -- look. romney has to look ahead. people know how they feel now. he can't say well the president did this or the other thing. this is what i can do for you and make your life better. if he can do that, all right, and then he can put the president on the defensive a few times, he'll gain. >> last thing on this. what do you think of the expectations games going on where each candidate is trying to outdo each other complimenting the other's debasing prowess? >> it's like a football game. you know those people, you know. it's play it down, tamp it down. it's all a game. >> let's talk about the book, "killing knennedy." how do you feel about president kennedy and did that change? >> you know, kennedy died i was 13 and i opened the book where i was, i was at high school out on long island and came over the loud speaker and everybody alive then knows where they were. but people don't know whoion kennedy was. and that's number one. after reading "killing kennedy" you'l

will no doubt see evidence of that bromance unfold thursday night. on the other hand, mitt romney's put paul ryan in the position where he has to defend statements like this. >> . >> so it feels like passionate romance and a marriage of convenience here between these two. is that the key thing that a vp has to be is basically champion for his principal? is that what people are looking for in the vp debate? >> unless the vp think they don't have much of a shot. in which case he has to think ahead to the next election cycle. it's clear to me what's what paul ryan is doing. so he should be. >> the interesting thing here, way back when they put ryan on the ticket, i thought i understood why. i thought the calculation was romney looked and said all summer long, i've been behind. this isn't budging. i need something dramatic here. i i'm going to run on the paul ryan plan. maybe it's translated as courageous and bold. they put ryan on the ticket and panicked and said wait a minute. we can't run of these ideas. they've tried to turn paul ryan into a generic -- i propose this medicare plan. we're not
